Q&A with Mary Connor, CAE, AAiP
President, SMG Association Consulting LLC
Chief Strategy Officer, Stringfellow Management Group
SMG Consulting: Mary, lately we’ve been talking a lot about association “health” at SMG. But you often distinguish between a full Organizational 360 Assessment and an annual Health Check. Can you explain the difference?
Mary Connor: Absolutely — and it’s a bit like the difference between your annual physical and a full diagnostic workup.
The Organizational 360 (Org360) is the deep dive. It’s the MRI of your association. We look at everything — governance, culture, finances, operations, member engagement, leadership, communication — and how they interact and position the association for the future. It’s comprehensive and designed to give a full picture of where your organization stands today and how it can perform better tomorrow.
The Health Check, on the other hand, is your annual wellness visit. It’s quicker, focused, and meant to keep you on track between those deeper dives. It’s how you make sure your day-to-day operations still align with your strategic direction — what we call your Strategic Roadmap.
SMG Consulting: So when should an association invest in a full Org360?
Mary: If it’s been a while since anyone’s really looked under the hood — it’s time.
I tell clients: if your association hasn’t done a comprehensive assessment in three years, you probably don’t know what’s really going on anymore. Things shift — leadership, members, markets, even technology expectations. An Org360 helps you see the full system, not just one squeaky wheel.
And sometimes, you can feel it’s needed. Maybe there’s friction between board and staff, or programs aren’t delivering like they used to. That’s your “check engine” light. The Org360 doesn’t just diagnose symptoms — it uncovers the causes.
SMG Consulting: What does that process look like?
Mary: It’s immersive. We interview stakeholders, run surveys, review documents, and analyze performance metrics. We look for alignment (or misalignment!) between your mission, structure, and results.
Then we bring it all together into a report and facilitated discussion with the board. That conversation is my favorite part — honest, sometimes messy, but always illuminating.
I joke that it’s like holding up a mirror. Some folks brace themselves, but once they see the full picture, they’re empowered. They finally have data to make decisions instead of hunches.

SMG Consulting: And once the Org360 is complete, that’s where the Health Check comes in?
Mary: Exactly! Once you’ve done the deep dive, you don’t need to repeat it every year — you just need to stay on course.
The Annual Health Check is a structured check-in tool. It helps boards and staff measure how aligned operations still are with their Strategic Roadmap — which, by the way, is another SMG tool we use to help associations set clear, actionable priorities after their Org360.
Think of it like recalibrating your GPS. You’re checking: Are we still heading toward our goals? Are our systems and people supporting that direction? Are there early warning signs we should address before they become crises?
SMG Consulting: That makes sense. So what’s actually in the Health Check?
Mary: It’s built around five dimensions of organizational health — what I call the “vital signs” of an association:
It’s quick — usually a one-to-two-hour conversation paired with a short self-assessment survey. The goal isn’t perfection; it’s awareness and continuous improvement.
SMG Consulting: How do clients typically respond to these reviews?
Mary: With relief and gratitude, honestly. The Org360 can feel like therapy for associations — we unpack everything. But the Health Check feels like maintenance — it’s empowering.
One client told me, “Mary, it’s like getting a little reassurance that we’re still okay.” And I laughed and said, “Exactly! That’s the point. You’re checking your organizational pulse, not performing surgery.”
SMG Consulting: For associations that haven’t done either yet, where should they start?
Mary: Start with the Organizational 360 Assessment — especially if it’s been years since your last evaluation or if you sense hidden issues. You can’t fix what you haven’t examined. Once that’s complete, use the Strategic Roadmap to set your direction, and then maintain your progress with the annual Health Check.
It’s a cycle of learning and alignment — deep reflection, focused planning, regular tune-ups. Associations that commit to that rhythm are the ones that thrive year after year.
SMG Consulting: Any last words of wisdom for association leaders in 2025?
Mary: Don’t wait for a crisis to start asking questions. Self-assessment isn’t about criticism — it’s about stewardship.
And remember, no one ever regretted learning more about their organization. They only regret waiting too long to do it.
Besides, I like to tell boards — an ounce of reflection is worth a pound of panic later!
